For all the positive aspects of the Philippines, the World Risk Index for 2024 ranks the Philippines as the country with the highest natural disaster risk in the world. Typhoons, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions occur on a regular basis here — no where is perfect. However, with just some commonsense prepping ethos can be the difference between life and death in an emergency.

Don’t buy land and build a house on a flood plan or close to the ocean. Well, you can, but you have to assume that at some point, you will be flooded. If you absolutely must have the beach villa, then you may want to consider building it on stilts — possibly 15-20 foot stilts given the largest typhoon surges that have occurred in the last few years.

If you are going to live in the Philippines, especially the provinces, you should plan ahead for emergencies including:

food
water
power
cash (the ATM machines may not be working for a while)
sanitation
tools
medical supplies
communication
build your home with earthquakes and typhoons in mind.
transportation
protection
